一一、论“造新因”（一月十一日）
ItistruethatIhavemuchsympathywiththerebels.ButIdonotfavorthepresentrevolution.Ihavecometoholdthatthereisnoshort-cuttopoliticaldecencyandefficiency.Notthat,ashasbeensuggested,amonarchyisanecessarystageofdevelopment.Butthatgoodgovernmentcannotbesecuredwithoutcertainnecessaryprerequisites.ThosewhoholdthatChinaneedsamonarchyforinternalconsolidationandstrengtharejustasfoolishasthosewhoholdthatarepublicanformofgovernmentwillworkmiracles.NeitheramonarchynorarepublicwillsaveChinawithoutwhatIcallthe"necessaryprerequisities".Itisourbusinesstoprovideforthesenecessaryprerequisites,—to"createnewcauses"（造因）.

〔中译〕说实话，吾对造反者甚感同情。可是，吾不赞成现今之革命。吾一贯坚持，通向开明而有效之政治，无捷径可走。有些人主张，君主制是政治发展之一必经阶段，吾对此亦不赞成。吾以为，倘若缺乏某些确定的、必要的先决条件，那就无法保证获得一个好政府。有人认为，为达到国内统一与强大，中国需要君主制；又有人认为，中国只有实施共和政体，才能创造奇迹。吾以为，上述两种主张皆是愚蠢之举。倘若缺乏吾所谓之“必要的先决条件”，那么，无论是君主制，还是共和制，皆不能救中国。吾辈之职责在于，准备这些必要的先决条件——即“造新因”。
和持君主论之吾友相比，吾准备走得更远。吾甚至不让一个外国征服者，来转移吾“造新因”之注意力。更不用说目前的一点小更动了！
吾要指责持君主论之吾友，他们把现存之反动政府、他们所热爱之国家和我们皆希望的那个“诚实的、有效率的政府”三者混为一谈。
