这首诗批评了缺乏现实体验的模拟文风(如西昆体、江西诗派等),指出了诗歌(文学)创作的源泉是客观现实,真情必然来自诗人的切实生活感受。元好问认为,文学作品不是作家头脑中虚构的,而是客观现实在头脑中的反映。只有像杜甫那样“亲到长安”,对客观的描写对象有了实际的接触和体验,才能激发内心的感受,写出入神的诗句。如果一味去“暗中摸索”,临摹前人的作品,是永远不可能在诗中真实地描绘出现实对象的(“总非真”)。这样,元好问就在杜甫和杜诗的影写者们中清晰地划出了一条真、假诗人地界限。
